Are their hickory staves any good and do they require a backing material?

Hickory is one of those woods that allows you to make a few mistakes and still get the bow to survive.  It is a recommended wood if you are limited to boards for your bows, because you can skip backing if the grain is fairly straight!

That being said, I have no firsthand experience with their staves.  If the staves look fairly straight, you should be fine.

Never heard of them, but you know for twenty bucks you can get enough maple or hickory lumber to build three maybe four bows

I've never seen one first hand but they supply allot of other web stores with bows and staves including 3 rivers. Not that i wouldnt "trust" then per say, but id feel more comfortable seeing the actual stave before purchase, rather than luck of the draw.

EDIT: sorry i thought you said rudder bows. ringing rocks is supplied mostly by rudder bows tho along with many other web sites.

Their customer support is hit-and-miss and when questioned they claim their bows are always tillered to perfection when the photos on their own site contain flaws from small to obvious.  Had a couple experiences with one of their people on reddit, it was all pretty standard until someone posted asking if 3" of set is normal for a 70" bow drawn to 28".
