Original source material for Mollegabet Bow?
« on: July 20, 2015, 09:18:56 am »
I've been searching the web, but there is too much info on modern"Mollegabet" bows. I can't seem to find any info on the actual archaeological find >:(
It's the curse of the interweb... I end up with pics of my own stuff or PA bows/threads.
Anyone got a link to info on the original?

Del, you might try perusing some of the PaleoPlanet posts: Mollagabet or holmegaard What's the difference?

Dell,
I believe that the Danish National Museum has most of the info from the dig site and maybe even re: to other similar finds. I found the site a couple times and should have saved it but did not. I could not figure out the english translation tool at the time.

I wasn't aware of this more recent artifact until a few days ago, it seems our speculation on the design of these bows was mostly correct.

Black locust. Black locust everywhere.
Mollegabets all day long.
Might as well make them short, save some wood to keep warm.

Unfortunately no. Halfeye posted it, I hadn't seen it before.

The picture that Rich and Marc referenced is the Harjno artifact. Del send a pm to a member here that goes by Holten101. He is pretty knowledgeable on the lever bows.

What we used to call the holmgarde we now call a molagabet. The holmgarde is much more similar to the american longbows. I don't have any references but have seen photos.

Thanks everyone, I'm following the leads.
I was sort of worried that the bow I'm making was looking a bit "square" and that maybe we were actually progressively changing the design to something over stylised, a sort of caricature of the original. (any thoughts about that?)
Mind it could be I'm just slipping into overthink.
I hope to get my bow finished and posted soon, but I've been busy putting down a new floor... I think Mrs Cat :-* will expect the skirting boards painted too. Off for a few days to see my old Mum next week.
Never enough bow making time!

This is what was thought to be the so called Møllegabet bow, just a small piece, grey area, was found.
At that time a bit speculative if you ask me to interpret it as a bow, but now that the Hjarnø bow was found in 2011 in Horsens fjord it makes more sense. Markus
