dogwood hunting arrows

These are a set of hunting arrows I made to match the recent osage bow I posted.  I harvested some grey dogwood shafts on new years day this year and let them dry for a few months before picking out some of the better ones. The points are nodena-banks knapped by the one and only Jackcrafty (Thanks Patrick).  I dyed the shafts the same as the osage bow, using both a mahogany and a burgandy leather dye. Primary Turkey wing fletchings, and Canadian snow goose tracer feathers, then wrapped with deer sinew.  These are my first arrows made from shoots that I collected.  They fly really well out of a 40# bow.

I always enjoy looking at beautiful and well made arrows that match the bow they will be shot from.  You nailed it with this set, very nice.

Unbelievable. I have a dogwood shaft I harvested many years ago all ready to go. That is the phase most of my stuff is. Fixin to get ready to start. I love to color scheme and all the detail.

Well seasoned shafting is as critical as well seasoned bow wood as far as consistency and IMO makes the best bows and arrows.

I agree Pat,  I let these shoots season with bark on for about 2-3 months, then I debarked and let them season for another 3 months all bundled up of coarse.  Then I straightened them with steam, rebundled and let them sit for a couple days, straightened again, and then proceeded to cut self nocks, stain, seal, paint, fletch, and haft points.   Forgot to mention, these are all spined within 5 lbs, and they weight about 12-13 gpp each.  They were a ton of work, but a great learning experience.
