elm bark wrap

Thought there may be a few interested in another option for a wrap.last years bark left outside for the winter and soaked in water overnight.i remove the corky bit with a knife and peel a rough piece out.

After the outer bark is removed,i carefully roll it up being care full not to kink it.i tie a piece of thread to keep it in place.after letting it dry for a bit,i soak inn linseed oil over night,leaving the thread outside of the jar and clamped for removal.more to come.

The linseed oil makes the bark pliable and not likely to crack even with a aggressive tight wrap.the inner bark will crack other wise.WG, I hav'nt tried it as a backing,although I have a quiver in the works.k, I removed the coil and wiped dry with a rag,let it dry for and hour.squared up the piece c/w a light sanding and sealed with shellac.

That's what I was thinking of using for my first bow since I have a big piece of it. -- thanks greatly for showing the details of how you do it!

Thanks for that interesting post, will try that one day.
I have lots of elm bark saved. Made some quivers (with the cork) out of it, still have enough stuff.
The quiver btw. is very light and stable.

  COOL but if your going use as a backing do'nt put it in or put anything on it. I've never tryed it CROOKETARROW told me it was'nt a good backing and came off atfer a little time. That dry elm bark has very litte streach and will sart to pop off after a little time.

  He never said how little time,I did'nt ask. To me if he said something to me. I took it a the way it is.

  He built selfbows for over 50 years. So you deside.

   I never tryed it ofcorse there a lot better glue's than he used. He only use'd hide glue so give it a try and let us know.
