Is this a fossil?

I found this in a riverbed while out fishing and hiking this morning. It caught  my eye but I wasn't sure what to think of it.



What do you guys think? I've never found a fossil before and only ever seen them in museums and on TV. Do you think its a fossil or is it just some sort of interesting fracture or erosion pattern? I think it looks like a fern or a tree twig. I searched around for more, but didn't see anything else.

It looks like a fossil. In comparison, this fossil is a squid Shell(nautiloids), 460 million years old.

does not look like a fossil nor even sedimentary rock to me. It's a "geofact"

Looks more like a fossil than a geofact from what I've read about geofacts but that's a debate all its own

I've never heard of a geofact before. I'll have to look into that.

Most likely not. But I would check what fossils are common
in your area and in what type material they they are found.
Any library or a google search should work.

Fossil hunting is a blast and quickly becoming a past time for my son and I. We mostly find coral polyp and shells. Still, its fun. River bottoms.are the best natural place to look, rock quarries are often the best otherwise. Considering where you fou d it id be inclined to say its a strong possibility of being a fossil.

The local university has a geology department, and I'm an alumni so I know a few people there. I think I'm going to get in contact with them and see what they say.

thanks, bubby, I guess its not really a geofact, but I still don't think its a fossil. Hard to see the rock, but it does not look sedimentary.
