Fun learning.
« on: May 28, 2015, 10:22:35 am »
I split out the post oak I have . Started playing with a small piece. 41" long 1 1/8 at handle, down to 1/2 "
tapered tips. Steaming some set in handle.  Now I am ignorant on heat treating. How do you do that ?
I will make this one for my grandson. He's 9.

Starting at the handle turn your heat gun on high and hold it in one spot about 3-4" away from the belly. As that spot darkens (usually 60-90 seconds) slowly move along until your at the tip. Just that simple. Id clamp it down as you go so it doesn't twist up or move.

Spotted dog have you used post oak before? If so how do you like it? I have some oak at my house that is very similar in characteristics but haven't used it yet.

This is my first time. I like it , easy to work. It takes set easy, but backs some power.
The dust irritates my eyes, but so does osage .   Got to keep a sharp saw blade cause it likes to wander
as cutting.
Thanks on the tip. Maybe some Mountain Mississippi  Queen.

We used to jam that song, one of my faves to play. More cow bell!
