for copper boppers
« on: May 22, 2015, 07:58:52 am »
I posted a thread last year on making myself a new billet.
There were a few questions that I wasn't prepared to answer.
I finally made another trip to get some more of these inserts.
I really like the heft they give and there may be an added
zing from the hollowness. I wore the top of the one inch cap
off the original.
No matter it works just as well with out it.
The inserts cost about $5 the caps are a buck and a half.
I used a benzomatic type propane torch to solder the components.
I was in the trades so I saved alot of copper over the years.
The 3/4" copper pipe is abour eight inches long.

Zuma, I am a fan of the 1" caps half filled with lead, Are you saying the inserts will last
longer but are more expense, I am only getting about 4 months out of my caps :( I have changed to a copper handle so I just solder a new cap on the other end then melt my lead out of used end and then remove wore out cap, I just keep switching ends. I used to have wood handles but got tired of smelling burnt wood and JB Weld fumes plus what ever fumes comes off from the lead :o :(  Are the inserts a soft copper like caps with lead? I have tried solid copper heads and they seem harder to me, so I keep coming back to what I am used too. Thanks for the info on the inserts. Bob

Bob, I guess I am not a big fan of lead.
Most solders now are mostly silver and lead free.
The insert is pretty tough and like I said the
hollowness seems to help?? I'll keep the lead for fishin.
$5 give it a try.
