Tree ID, please???
« on: May 15, 2015, 09:50:33 am »
Is this a hickory tree? The leaves are just popping, so they are small and hard to see. I hunt morel mushrooms in this woods, but I did not think there were many--if any--hickory trees...if that is what this is. Thanks.

Looks like shagbark hickory but I'd wait until the leaves come out to be sure. Shagbark , like all hickories have pinnately  compound leaves. You can also be assured the bark will peel off easily if you wait a few weeks, once the leaves are out.

That's Hop Hornbeam, no doubt about it.
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.

I know where some are, but I just have never seen any in the woods I mentioned before.

Not a good specimen though. See that spiral in the pattern? Not good for HHB.

Right. I see what you are saying. Not to get off topic, but I whacked trout on the South yesterday after hunting mushrooms. Man, a caught a ton on dries.
