Yew sapwood

Look at the different layers in the sapwood. Is this common? I think I'll try to reduce the sapwood down to that white layer. It's about 3/16" thick. The color difference should simplify it :D :D

Is the whole stave both sides like that? Have you cut out the front profile yet? It doesn't look to bad ...sometimes it can have swirly varying shades....as long as it seems and feels sound its prob OK. And if that's the case and its only 3/16" thick sapwood I've leave it be IMO.

That white layer is 3/16 or all the sapwood is? I have a few rough outs where it has some brownish sapwood swirled in. I haven't bent any yet though

The white layer. Total sapwood is over 1/2" so I'm going to reduce it. I thought the white layer would make a good stopping point. It has to dry for a month or so first.

Yeah it's fairly common...
I suspect it may be something to do with the wood coming form the compression side of the tree.
