Mesquite Apache replica
« on: April 29, 2015, 01:24:39 am »
I got this piece of mesquite from Cipriano. It was a bit snaked and lumpy but easy to steam mostly strait. It still has a some minor bumps in one limb but is pretty clean. This is the first bow I have made from mesquite and the wood makes a good bow, but the best quality is the beautiful color. The bow is replicated from a page in "Bows ,arrows and quivers of the american frontier". The bow is 42" long and draws 70# @ 20"(That's why the full draw picture is a little blurry. I don't usually shoot 70# short bows.) The arrows pictured with this bow were 28" with 8" foreshafts, so it seems it would have been drawn 20". It has a 3 layer sinew backing and sinew wrapped handle painted with ocher. The string is 2 ply sinew. It took a few tries to try and copy the knot. It looks pretty close and does the trick.

Gee whiz- no wonder the Apache were such fearsome warrior's carrying weapons like that! :-)

Woo.. 70# at 20"  :o
I have a dumb ass Brit question about drawing short...
How do you avoid your hand recoiling back and smacking you in the mouth as you loose? :-[
I demo'd a short bow at a have-a-go, shooting a whistling arrow... gave myself a fat lip :o
Mind the audience like it ::)

Very nicely done sir.....believe you are correct on draw, it's my understanding that NA consider the foreshaft as part of the head so they "draw to the head". You already knew that I'm sure.......anyway another superior piece of work sir.
