Showing off
« on: April 29, 2015, 02:23:36 pm »
Just thought I'd show off a little.  Not to be arrogant, but I'm genuinely proud of my work.

Here are two points I pulled off broken arrows.  One is a standard field point, the other one I forged.  Both 125gr.  Both hit a number of rocks.  Goes to show the difference between scrap steel and hardened tool steel (W1).

Yet, like all things, there are draw backs.  If I were to put a price tag on mine, i.e. hired to forge a dozen, they'd easily cost 10-15 times as much as a $6/dozen bag of field points.  So in most cases, it'd be easier to just replace the field point with another field point, or to file a new point on the old one, or to hit the target and not rocks  ;D I might save on shafts that way as well.

nothing wrong with showing off a little--I thought that was the main point of this site.  I like your work

Just out of curiosity. have you ever tried heat treating the store bought tips? Or are they are supposed to be heat treated already?

I have not but I imagine they are made from cheaper, non-hardenable steel.  Probably mild steel.

Yah, in the picture they look pretty soft. I thought it might be worth a shot.

I like yours better.
Guns have triggers. Bicycles have wheels. Trees and bows have wooden limbs.

cost wise: same with cane arrows, more durable, more work, but still what I go to always.

Life isn't always about money.  Sometimes its more fulfilling to have nice things, even if they do cost 10x more

Can we see a picture without your fingers in the way? ;) I'd like to see how they attach.

The original pic is conical, but the only run I did like that.  Always done square before, and I think I prefer that.
