Pine Resin, Beeswax & Vegetable Oil Finish
« on: April 17, 2015, 11:07:23 am »
I've just about finished the Hazel Warbow... I don't feel Danish oil is somehow right as a finish.
Going through the woods the other day I scraped a load of resin that was oozing from one of the pine trees (like you do )
Will it mix in with beeswax oil finish to make it a bit more durable (nicer smelling too :-*)
Any thoughts? I'll try to avoid setting fire to the shop ::)
There is loads of dusty under-bark stuff on the back of the bow (I daren't call it cambium for fear of starting another tedious thread about botanical exactitude ::) ) I feel a simple finish will best cope with it continuing to flake off with time.

Del, the resin/bees wax/veg oil should blend together well. I've not done it with veg oil but have with bear fat. The combo makes a good leather dressing too. It may go on better if the bow is warmed before applying. A good, vigorous hand rubbing will help too.

Cheers, I'll give it a go. I like natural stuff collected from the wild.

Well that was fun :)
I popped over the road and collected some more resin, melted it in an old sauce pan with some beeswax and oil polish (got it out of the kitchen before it started smoking too much).
Strained it through some old net curtain that I use for pressing my cider pomace and slapped it on the bow still warm
It looked like toffee and was sticky as hell. I got a damn good work out rubbing it in, a wipe over with a cloth dampened in white spirit took off any excess... looks good, I'll go over it with my usual polish. The left over stuff I'll soften up with something or stir it into my wax oil mix.
All good fun
