when sinew backing can i layer 3 types of sinew?
« on: April 11, 2015, 11:59:40 pm »
This will be my first time backing a bow and i am using sinew, i have enough back leg sinew for two layers of a backing and enough backstrap sinew for one maybe two layers of sinew. Would i be able to layer it leg, backstrap, leg?

It's no problem. Its all the same stuff. Do your last layer with the longest stuff

I've never used sinew. .. how much does it take for a ~70" bow 2 layers?

Nobody has ever sinewed a 70" bow, tough question Paco. Id ask the 36" bow guys and then double it ;)

Why are you sinew backing a 70" bow?  That's usually not a good idea unless you have something like a 40" draw length.
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

I'm with The Outlaw.  The extra mass weight of the sinew on a bow that long will cancel out its benefits for speed.  Also, I prefer leg sinew for bow backing.  But to answer your question, I don't see any reason why you couldn't use sinew from different species.  Unless there might be different stretch, recovery or shrinkage rates.  Probably negligable though.  I would choose one or the other; leg or back.

I've made sinew backed bows with deer leg and back sinew, deer and elk sinew, deer and emu sinew and they all worked well and together.

maybe if you wanted to use one thin layer,, like a rawhide back,, it would be ok on the longer bow

Cool PatB!  Never tried mixing leg and back!  I've got a bunch of back that I don't do much with except for bandaids and wrapping.

I've mixed it up 2 times before I saw no differance.
I once used moose and did'nt have enough. So I put layer of steer first covered with mosse.

Matt, the little sinew backed bow that Gary gave the kids stave has 3 courses of all back sinew. I prefer back sinew because I can get a neater application and only cow was better than backstrap for me.
