Bamboo backed Yew with Boa Skin
« on: April 02, 2015, 07:32:07 pm »
This was glued up at the same time as the other Yew Board bow I did.  This also took more string follow than I'd have liked.
forgot the poundage.

Think it's 52# at 28.  Been busy at work.

Beautiful bow.
How long is it?
Did you glue it up straight or with a little reflex? I usually add a couple of inches reflex, most of which will pull out.
What colour socks were you wearing? ;D

Yea a lot more of it pulled out than I expected.   :-[

Oh well it shoots great.  Tiller is nice.  Don't have a photographer but after 25 or so bows, I'm typically good on that front.

Looks good

Bamboo works well with high elevation Yew, not so much with low elevation Yew which you have there.  If you have any more of that then use a Hickory or Maple backing.

Well busted a deep recurve while bending.  Wind check I could barely see.  And my backer bowed up the wrong way. >:(. Lost my temper.  Not certain surgery is worth it.  May try.

Still have the sinew bow that cracked to heck!  Repairs seem to be holding bu not that attractive.

Third one is maple backed shallower recurve.  Then will raw hide back that. The yew is phenomenal wood, what ever the elevation......

Darnit!

the string follow grew a bit more even!

I've been able to adjust the bend on boo backed bows with weldwood a bit with Heat.  But I've Skinned this boo.

I'm considering trying to gently heat it back into a Reflex form to regain some of the reflex I've lost or is that a lost cause?

Instead of using heat to bend it, another option is to run a kerf into the ends of the limbs with a bandsaw for about 10", and glue in an appropriate thickness yew parallel lam while inducing more reflex or a gentle recurve shape to the outer limb.
Straight wood may make a better bow, but crooked wood makes a better bowyer
