Yew Hunting Bow 64" 58#@27"
« on: March 27, 2015, 08:11:02 pm »
This bow is made from a stave of Pacific yew. It was a pretty straight and well behaved piece of wood aside from a few funky knots. It's an American flatbow style measuring 64" ntn and 1 1/2" wide. It pulls 58#@27". The owner plans to use it for elk and deer hunting here in Oregon. Here's hoping it does the job! The handle wrap is leather soaked in water and wrapped with twisted string to give a pattern. The finish is eight coats of tru-oil polished to a satin finish. The tip overlays are buffalo horn. The string is fastflight and the string silencers are otter fur. It was a fun project and I'm pleased with the results, I hope the owner is as well.

Sorry for the bad quality of this picture but it shows the tiller better. That's what I get when I try to take my own pictures with the timer.  ::)

Thanks, Chuck!

Thank you, Wizardgoat. It was a fun stave to work. Though I have to admit I was a little nervous making a bow from a stave that belonged to someone else. I didn't want to mess it up.

Thank you, Jon!

Very nice Weylin, that sap/heart wood contrast and the knots and grain on the back really give it some unique looking character. Tips and grip are top notch as well. beauty of a bow.
I ain't broke but I'm badly bent.

Yet another awesome bow!  The tiller, handle, tips, knots... tip to tip that bow is SWEET!  Good work as always!  8)

Love the pictures too.   I wish I had a cool forest near by and a decent camera...
Talking trees. What do trees have to talk about, hmm... except the consistency of squirrel droppings?

That bow finished up nicely. I am sure he is going to be very happy with it. I don't think I would be able to pull a bow left handed, even for a photo.

Is that a new stitching pattern? I like it.   8)

Thank you, BB. It was definitely a pretty piece of yew. I tried to work with what it offered.

Thanks, Arrowind! I did all this with a cheap point and shoot camera and a tree behind my apartment. Though I know any trees are hard to come by in Phoenix.  ;D  ;)

Thank you, Bubby.

Thanks Carson. I was shaking so much at full draw pulling this guy out to full draw with my right hand that I though for sure the picture was going to come out blurry!
