Osage Pyramid Flatbow 42# at 27" Pic heavy
« on: March 18, 2015, 03:57:04 pm »
Here is a bow I finished up last night. I traded John Strunk for nice piece of osage that was wide, thin, flat and about 60" long with nice growth. I knew exactly what bow I wanted to make from it. I opened up Alleley and Hamm to the Osage Indians section and studied the simple pyramid bow that Saxton Pope supposedly test shot and was impressed with. I made the bow to the specs except that the version I made was elongated compared to the original.

The bow came in at 60 # at 26" draw and it was a real arrow launcher. However, I needed to make the bow for a person who needed a lighter bow. I brought it down in width and thickness until it hit 42# at 27".

Tip to tip the bow is 58.5" ntn is 57.5"
about 1" wide through handle, and 2" wide at widest. (it was 2 3/8" before the weight loss)
The pin nocks are 1/4" wide.
Beeswax finish and braintan deer thong handle wrapped. Between the beeswax and the smokey braintan this is the best smelling bow I have ever made  ;D

Thanks guys!! I really enjoyed building this one. I definitely like this design, especially at the higher draw weight. This pyramid build has me thinking about Del's experiment with the plexiglas pyramids...have to revisit that.

Really cool bow. I really want to make one of those. Yours looks exactly like the illustration in the book. Nice work

Good job, nice replica. I've studied that drawing about a dozen times and could only imagine what type of missile launcher it must have been. Thanks for showing us.
