Little sliver bow 43# @ 26" 48" osage
« on: March 16, 2015, 09:46:59 am »
Hey fellas,
This piece of wood was left from cleaning up some stave for a friend. The osgae was hand split and had some real bad tear-outs and annular ring separations, so I cleaned them up with a big bandsaw.
This piece was 3/4" wide at one end and 1-1/4" at the other, had 2-3 bad tearouts on the thin edge, 3 pin knots right on the edge and 2 rings on the fat end and one on the thin end. Then there was the recurved dogleg at the small end, and a bunch of back violations......just couldn't bring myself to burn it.

I straightened some of the dog leg, flipped the strong end to match (well close anyway) and steamed in about 1" of reflex right in the middle. The wood was so small the only tool used was a small "four-in-hand" rasp file combo and a scraper.

Havent done any finish work and left it bare so you can see there is no backing or patches etc. The first pics are the usual and then some close-up poics of the "issues". Bow shoots very well for it's draw weight and I'm glad I salvaged it.

48" ntn, 43# @ 26", osage splinter. >:D

Rich you da man on them shorties. Gives me courage to see how much shorter I can go. A sliver is right. It amazes me how little wood it takes to make a killin bow outta osage. Vyour tiller as always looks great.

Jeeeesh Rich, 26" outta 48" stave and hunting weight? I'd say you got all of that one :o Nice job on saving that piece and turning it into shooter bud...You do have a reputation for successfully bending them to the limit Sir 8) 8) 8)

Thank you fellas, but it's just a piece of scrap and is a long ways from a "fine" bow. There is a certain amount of freedom goes with something you never thought had a chance, like not being worried about yankin it back, figured it would break anyway, but it didn't. Maybe because of it's low draw weight.

Hey Falcon, if this keeps up I might just rank it up there with Ironwood ::) >:D >:D

Doc, closest arrow weight I had for her was just over 11 gr/ pound and she shoots flat at 18yds cant get back no more till the snow cooperates.

Pappy, Dell  thank you sir's.

Sidewinder,  no big deal, retired and a lot of time to play, and cabin fever

AJ, judging by the tiller you got goin on yours is gonna be a screamer, sir. 8)

Don, I seen your OS shorty (oh ya it mine now and gets shot most every day) you sir are gettin all of it out of your bows as well ;)

thanks again
