Most Recent Knapping
« on: March 15, 2015, 04:54:03 pm »
Since we had the knapping at my house on Feb. 21 I have been busy sawing and cooking and I have done a little knapping. Several that I made did not turn out as well as I would like, so I'm not showing them. These are the ones for show. They are pretty good. Most were made from slabs. Now that I have done a good bit of slab work, it is obvious to me that slabs do conserve a lot of rock, but the knapping is tougher, and it takes longer. I know the flaking is wrong for most if not all these, but it is what I can do now. Maybe I will some day be  good enough to do serious replications.

I don't know the type of the first one. That flake was given to me by another knapper. The one further down with greys, browns etc. is picture jasper. I have not had good luck with what I have of that stuff in the past, but I cooked that one to 430 F, and it flaked nicely. Percussion was doing a lot cleaner job with it than pressure flaking. For some reason, pressure flakes tended to crumble or terminate in a step. Percussion feathered out nicely.
