hello all! - about a year ago i glued a riser to an already tapered slat of purpleheart and it came out off the hotbox wavy; from than on it stood in the corner of shame and hearing about purpleheart fretting so easy didn't encourage me to do something with it.
now this lady friend of mine wanted me to make her a bow and i gave it a try and backed it with hardmaple.
backing the bow with the rope and wedges method helped reducing the waves a bit but i could get rid of most of them in the tillering process.
working with the wood is no fun at all. no tool seems to work on it well and a smooth surface is really hard to reach.
but in the process i really started liking the bow and i had an idea she would come out beautiful. and she did!
the bow is 65" ntn and now pulls 36#@26" (32 to 35# was what i went for) and for the drawweight the bow does shoot nice!
there was a curl or pinknot or something right on the edge of the lower limb with a tag on it "meant to fret" - but it didn't; the patch (rawhide wrapped w/linen) you see on the lower limb is to keep it that way
well here she is, thanks for looking,
frank
