Some recent projects
« on: March 03, 2015, 12:44:13 am »
I took advantage of the recent stretch of bad weather and finished up a few indoor projects. Last year at the Classic I talked to Cody (Misslemaster) about a hand forged fork and spoon set to use at gatherings.  When I saw Cody again at Marshall he handed me a cool looking set of eatin' tools.  I added some curly osage scales with brass pins.  They are finished with 6 coats of tung oil.  I formed some leather and made a double sheath so I would always be prepared for a good meal  ;D  Thanks again for doing the metal work Cody!

I've also been working on a couple of hatchets for gifts.  I found this Craftsman mini hatchet head in my Grandfathers tool shed when we were tearing it down.  He passed away over 20 years ago.  The hatchet head is in rough shape with a lot of pitting.  I cleaned it up the best I could with a brass wire brush wheel.  I found a picture online of the hatchet with the original handle.  I used some curly osage and made a new one matching the shape the best that I could.  I finished it with 6 coats of tru-oil.

I also made a new osage handle for this throwing hawk.  I traded Wildman for it a few years ago.  Its made from an old leaf spring.  Its finished with several coats of spray polyurethane and tung oil.

Aaaah... Clint! I can't believe you're making axe handles outta osage. Makes me cry. I wish I had enough osage just laying around to do that!  :'(

That utensil holder turned out smashing Clint. Same with the other items, nice job.

That's one comfortable-looking hatchet handle ... and a memory to go with it.   Win/Win.

Everything looks really good, but that axe is over the top beautiful! Since it was your Grandfathers, that means a whole lot more to have restored it. I think the pits just add a ton of character! Money cannot buy something like that.
