Osoberry billets and staves (more pics added)

These are some of the biggest osoberry sbrubs I have ever found, just figured to show what I had

Lots of walking close to swamp areas, most areas like that have never been replanted, so you end up with shrubs that have not been cleared in close to a hundred yrs in some areas. I love areas like this, you never know what you will find....just today I found a absolutely huge Nine bark shrub, again the biggest I personally have ever seen in the wild.

                      Very dense wood.....I like it a lot, but a not so easy to find wood in any size.....that's the reason for the post in the first place.....you finding it in these sizes?

I wouldn't know it if I saw it.  I'd recognize it if I saw the berriers, I think, but not this time of year. 
I'd like to see a close up of the bark.  Any other distinquishing characteristics?

Now is the time to look, it will be the first to show small white flowers, and here anyway they are just starting to show. The bark is quite different between a young shrub, and older.....I will take some pics. I will head out to the woods and try to get some good pics of it....once you know what it is, you should be able to find it everywhere....at least here....size is another matter.

I'd love to see some pics too, a gardener told me she sees it everywhere here, I'd love to add it to my list of trees to look out for.  I've taken photos offf the net in my phone of the leaves, flowers and berries, but can't find many bark photos, or growing characteristics and overall shape

The first is just a nice vinemaple...then on to the osoberry.....oops first oso, then vine.... Just found a bunch of pipe straight Hawthorn as well yesterday.

Nice find Brian. I havent found any of those areas with the indian plum or ninebark that old/big, but found some ancient dogwood and rose patches the other day. Gotta love those areas. 

Funny you posted this today, I was just nibbling on some osoberry buds today while at the park with the kids. tasted really good at first and turned a little acrid towards the end. They are about a week farther along budding here than what you have pictured there.

Funny you posted this today, I was just nibbling on some osoberry buds today while at the park with the kids. tasted really good at first and turned a little acrid towards the end. They are about a week farther along budding here than what you have pictured there.

Dogwood, I think that wood is as pretty as you get here in the northwest, damn good bow wood, and works excellet with a spokeshave. Kinda a "waxy" feeling when removing wood. Got a pic of the dogwood? 2 days ago I found a nine bark I could not get my hands around....how is it for bow wood, you worked it?
