I want out in the wood pile stocking my moms shed, and came across a maple burl. At first I thought it was too far gone, and almost thru it in the fire. Most of the inside of the burl had rotted out, and what was left inside was a swirling twisted mess that none of my tools would carve thru.
My original idea was to bore a series of holes into the twisted mess, to make it a bit easier to chisel out. Once I cleaned out all of the dust from making the holes, I was left with something that looks like a nest. So I left it, for now. I may end up chiseling it out, since Kathy doesn't want to have anything to do with it. She said it looked like some of the freaky stuff people like to post on Facebook and she wasn't looking at it.
