Hickory with ipe belly 'pics

I posted this bow a while ago before it was finished. It was a hickory selfbow that had a bad tiller so I cut it down and put ipe on the belly and glued it to a r/d design. it ended up 61 1/2" ntn and about 50# @ 28".  It shoots nice and fast. I named it the survivor but it remains to be seen if it will live up to its name.

That looks a very pretty bow.
How thick was the Ipe and how did you get it to fit to the fades?

Thanks Mark. The ipe was 1/8" when I put it on but got much thinner once it was all tillered. I sanded the ipe thinner on the ends by the fades prior to glue up and the ipe only goes halfway up the fades. I had to get it thin in this area so it would lay flat in the curve.

and thanks. I am not going to make another r/d bow for a while. I love the performance but I get a little frustrated with the tillering. I want to make a few with just a nice smooth arc. :)

  That is pretty Jesse. I've got 4 Ipe staves now, I really like that wood. Did it hold the shape after you tok it off the form?

Thanks mullet. Yes it held its shape good. The key to that is not to glue it too thick. The more flexible the pieces are the better they hold shape. Tri lam holds the shape perfect because there is such little stress on the glue joint during glue up. One thing I have found is if you round the sides too much you will loose a little reflex. I did that on this one.

Jesse, Full draw looks real good ! I don't see why it won't last. Just doing a glue-up like this takes solid wood working skills, plus there is a lot to be gained from re-working bows which don't come out right the first time even if they don't shine like yours did...

Thanks Rich. My next will be a boo backed ipe with reflex only. I got some great ipe from this guy in CA. Rich was his name hmmm what was his last name? I think it rhymes with scaffold . ;D
