I was told by the people at Rudderbows Archery to use leather dye,oil based i believe it was, instead of stain. Thats what tried and it was succesfull on my boo backed ipe elb.

  I use the little Testor model car paint and thin it down with mineral spirits or alcohol. A lot more choices in color and cheaper.

Yep, take the waxy coating off first. We have had the best results with alcohol based dyes or stain on bamboo.

  Like, Ryan said. Alcohol and Testors worked better for me too. Not as oily . Just make sure it's not the water based Testors.

ol' cheap Rit dye from the grocery store mixed with rubbing alchohol works great, too.

Whatever works on cane and bamboo arrows aught ta work on bamboo bow backings too. I have used berry juices to stain arrows before . (like the purple poke berry stained arrows I posted awhile back) Might be a good look for a bow too.

thanks guys i know i have to be careful as to not get into the power fibers so ill go slow, you think steel wool would be best.

jamie 1,

 remove the rind, just use the back of scraper then sand with very fine sandpaper,just to take down any ridges.

then go to the store and buy yourself some reddisf brown shoe polish, then rub in coats to make as dark as you wish, and when you are done, just buff it out. there is a waterproofing compound in it already.
i like to realy put on the layers heavy at tips and handle to give a faded effect.

I like use minwax mahogany stain on it and then coat with tru oil

Jamie just use your scraper and then sand lightly. Just dont sand the nodes down to much.....

Leather dye, it is alcohol based not oil based. You can blend it or lighten it with denatured alcohol.
