white oak paddle bow...
« on: January 25, 2008, 11:52:41 pm »
finaly got in the shop today, i cranked up the heater and got the temp up to a blistering 10 degrees!

i wanted to get my bith further along, white oak, laid out in a paddle type bow shape, roughed it out and took it almost to the first layer of good wood.the last pic looks a little funky but i could only work so much before my hands stuck to tools.

anyhow, this is my start of my bith entry...

Yeah it's cold here in the San Francisco bay area, too.  It got down into the 30s last few night's running

10* is way to cold for me.
I think it looks a little scary.  There is quite a bit of grain runout on the left side of the limb in that last picture.  Is there a reason why you laid it out on the cut side rather than laying it out on the outside of the tree where you can see the grain better?  Justin

justin, i laid it out on the belly of the soon to be bow "cause there was bark on the back at the time. why take all that extra bark off if you dont have too.
in pic #7 you will see that this is the pic of the back, no run offs, just a litle reddish color dried cambium left from two years of seasonong.
dana,
yes , it is a sawmill "slab of white oak.

justin, in the last pic you will see "hairy" pieces of rough outer cambium in the "valleys" and on some of the backs"ridges" you will see white streaks of perfectly onscaved back.

Jamie looks like it will be a nice looking Bow when you get it done....I used to have access to Wood Slabs from the Lumber Mill in Ishpeming, Michigan when I was a youngster...but now living in the Desert of Texas....I have to buy all my Wood...it's as rare as Water here!!! This looks to be more of a Pyramid Design than a Paddle Bow...at least by the looks of the Layout...keep us informed of your progress

yankee,
yea i guess it does but im going to trim it down alot and not as gradual taper to tips....i just left it as long as the original piece if lumber i had....it started out at 70"..i want like 62"-66" with needle tips.
plus i drew out the rough shape on the belly just to cut out an outline, so now that i am gettin a better view of the clean back..i will draw out what "final" shap i would like.
the widest part of the limbs are a tad over 2.75 inches!!!
so i have some room to play.

ya gotta love them Paddle Bows....they are so flowing.....the lines are the best part....and that big wide back for painting on....they are my favorite....might not shoot as smooth as some other style...but I will tolerate a little Hand Shock and keep making P.B.s...where you from in Michigan??? I was born and raised in Marquette County...Da UP EHH!!!
