quick stave
« on: June 07, 2015, 11:03:28 pm »
Due to an unfortunate circumstance that I wont get into I lost my bow and also my collection of staves. I am hoping to get one made in time for deer season (early enough to get some practice in again too) but the problem is I have no dry staves. I plan on heading to the cabin with my old man next weekend and hope to cut a tree, we mostly have maples the there is hophornbeam around also finding one that is straight, not too twisted, and knot free has been an issue though.

Is there a reasonable way to dry one in time? I am hesitant to try a hot box since I am out of town 5 days a week for work and it scares me to leave one unattended that long from a fire hazard perspective. Would leaving it in my truck help? I seem to remember having checking issues on hhb when I have tried that before.

Any other ideas?

If I was wanting to dry something fast I think I would try hickory.  What about a board bow?
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

Clint is right a board bow is the way to go for a hurry up bow, i prefer maple
failure is an option, everyone fails, it's how you handle it that matters.

I have never much enjoyed making board bows but perhaps you are right and that is my only option at this point.

Guess il focus the rest of my time roughing out staves to use next year.

You could try to trade for a seasoned stave
