Rawhide backing on a hole

Never had to put a backing on a stave with a hole. Do I put it over the hoke and leave it one piece? Or should I cut the hole out when I put it on? It seems to me like making a hole in the backing would help it sit more flush on the stave but I've never done this so looking for some ideas if anyone has dealt with this before.

I usually cut an "X" centered on the hole and fold the points down into the hole. The raw hide will conform to the contours with a little help.

I use the point of an exacto knife and just cut right around the inside of the hole.

OK those were the two ideas it seemed to me that would work best. I'm using titebond 3 any one have any objections to that with rawhide?
