wych elm haul
« on: February 18, 2015, 01:43:58 pm »
I noticed you guys over their like to post pics of your wood hauls...I was given a bunch of wych elm last week by some road workers clearing some roadside verges, asked em if I could take it and they said no problem. So heres a uk haul. Been splitting all day , heavy work..and here is the result Still more to split...It is very clean and pretty straight grained...a mixture of staves and billets...
Any uk bowyers want to trade some , get in touch. or I'll give billets for free,

Nice! Elm is very good bow wood when used properly.
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.

Nice Haul!  yeah, some very straight ones in there.

Nice! I'll take a stave (or two) off your hands if I'm over your way at all, and similarly if you are near me you're wecomed to come and rumage through my stash.
I dunno what the difference between Wych Elm and regular Elm is... I suspect there is also some confusion from medieval text between Wych Hazel and Wych Elm where wood has just been referred to as Wych.
Looks like you have decent equipment, chain saws and the like...

@ Osage Outlaw some of you guys over the pond don't realise how some of us in the UK are confined to a near urban environment without recourse to chainsaws, farm equipment 4x4s etc and we have less free access to woodland etc. There's no way we'd have the stuff to harves that monster Osage of yours...
Everything is smaller over here.... when I went to the Classic you guys were all tripping over me 'cos I'm so small O:)  ;)
Any how good haul.

cheers guys..

Del...wych elm has bigger leaves than english elm, and it is the only elm that grows here, it seems to be more resistant to the elm disease.
I told these tree butchers I wanted to make bows from it and they where very helpful and started cutting them in longer lengths for me, I got there at the exact time otherwise they would ave all been cut up.
