Steaming backing

Has anyone tried to use nylon strapping(seat belt stuff) instead of a metal strip to back recurves when you're steam bending them?

I actually know a guy that backed a bow with a seatbelt. Does that count?
Straight wood may make a better bow, but crooked wood makes a better bowyer

The strap  has to have no stretch in order to work.
