Quick opinion....
« on: February 05, 2015, 02:38:54 pm »
OK, opinion...  I really didn't want to go shopping this weekend, so I'm going to work with what I got.

I've got quarter sawn white oak, and flat sawn hard maple...

Should I make a white oak backed maple? Or a maple backed white oak? I've heard either could work.

I'm just going to be making a simple backed flatbow, nothing fancy, 1-1/2" to midlimb, then taper to around 3/8" nocks, and starting with about 2-3" of reflex.

If both pieces are quality enough to make backings, why go through the extra work to make a laminate?  I'd make a maple bow and a white oak bow.  Admittedly, I'm not a laminate guy.  So I'm probably missing the point.  Josh

True, either would make a good bow in it's own right, but I like to glue in reflex in my bows, so the backing really just serves that purpose.

What kind of draw weights do you get around 1-3/4" to 2" wide? I've not used maple before.

What are the board dimensions? If the boards are big enough, make one of each. One maple bckd oak and oak bckd maple.

Gundoc - how would one make an unbacked bow from a quarter sawn board? Been working with wood for awhile, but new to bows - still learning.

Providing that the grain runs true down all four faces of the board, just like you would with any board.  Lots of quartersawn board bows have been built.  I have 6 or 7 on the wall at home.  Just make sure the grain is straight and parallel with the board.  Jawge's site explains it pretty good.  Hopefully someone will chime in with the link.   I'm throwing in with Bubby.   Maple,........good, hard, consistent maple is great bow wood.  Backed with the oak, OR left in board bow form, it should make you a fine bow.

I'd personally, just cuz I can't stop messing around, cut out and thin-off a maple belly 2" wide, heat treat it (maple takes heat treating well, though it seems to improve it less than hickory or elm, it still improves it), then glue up a white oak backed, maple belly, Perry reflex pyramid rough out, and just mess a little with the tiller to compensate for the reflex.  And if I had to, I'd square the side parallel as I go, to 1/34" and see what she gives you for weight.

Hunting poundage in the 50's should be cake.....
