Limb fleck?
« on: February 07, 2015, 06:34:07 pm »
I'm making another maple board bow and it has some gorgeous fleck that runs perpendicular to the limb
You can actually feel it to the touch.  Will this effect the integrity of the wood?  I planned on rawhide backing this bow for protection as a hunting bow.

That looks more like "curl" rather than fleck. Big difference in the two.
What does the back look like?

Maple fleck isn't really crunchy like white oak is, shouldn't be a problem.

When a wood is quarter sawn you get these patterns called flecks. In oak it's know as medullary rays. It mainly affects diffuse porous woods eg. maple, pau am etc

I don't think it is what you have pictured above.  I believe it is the curl that pat was talking about.   I looked at some pictureso that ND it is more representitive of what I have.  It's almost a bow now anyway so will see what happens!  Thanks for all the comments guys.
