Looky looky what i just tooky :-D
« on: January 17, 2015, 02:58:35 pm »
Just rented a new property last month.  House has about an acre with it, plus about 40 acres surrounding it, some has trees.  Owner is quite flexible ;D

So i found this beauty due to a stray arrow that went into a pretty thick cedar grove.  Bout 12" diameter...not my usual fare, but too good to pass up!!!!!  Lotta work as the bolle was tangled up with the surrounding cedars, but when them yella shavings started flying from my chainsaw... adrenaline kicked in and carried me thru!!!  I literally was lumberjacking today, climbing to the top of a cedar tree to cut away tangled osage branches with the chainsaw lol   :o

Yessir!!!  If anybody has input on splitting, i welcome it.  I've never split one this big.  Allowing for 2" wide staves, i'm thinking I can get 16 staves from it ???, i don't THINK that's being greedy.  That doesn't count belly splits either.

12" diameter sounds just right. You should be able to split that up lickity split.

Nice log!  Make sure to seal the ends.  Post some pictures after you split it up.

You can ignore the Outlaw.  What does he know about Osage, anyway...oh, wait.  Personally, I think you should be ashamed--messing up all that cedar kindling for a little Osage!

All kidding aside, if you have time to wait to split it, the DVD "Rattlestick" has what I believe to be some good hints on where to split.

As I remember, Outlaw, doesn't your "Monster" thread have some how-to on splitting?  Maybe I am remembering that wrong.

Don't get greedy, it is real easy to destroy, rather than create.

You can keep halving it until its down to stave size.  You might get some belly splits depending on how clean  it separates.  There were some splitting pictures in that thread but not necessarily a how-to.

I am just hacked at K-hat because tomorrow I go out to try to free up my downed Osage log, and was all set to brag and crow about it tomorrow.  But there ain't no way it can be as clean and pretty as this one!

Congratulations!
