want to bild a hunting bow
« on: January 25, 2008, 09:03:05 pm »
I have a Osage log about 6" across ,I don't think it is twisted, and has no knots.
It is about 75" long.
my question is how do you split it straight? the last one I tyred to split went around the log like pretzel .

There are two, maybe more, ways to go about it. The first way is to let the grain of the wood dictate the split, if the log is truely straight it will split straight. The other way is to take a cirular saw and cut a ferf down the legnth of the log on both sides about and inch deep, then use wedges as you would in the first method. I don't care for the second method because if the grain is not straight you will have alot of waste.

Its probably best to just split it with wedges and hope for the best.  If the last one split around the log it probably wouldn't have made a bow anyway. At least not without some serious backing.  Justin
