Tickle me white !
« on: January 03, 2015, 07:36:46 pm »
So, thought I harvested a red oak stave from a fallen tree ..
Turns out my almost finished bow is white oak !!!

Found a great page that had a x10 pic of the end grain, using a
loupe I was taught another lesson ;)

http://www.wood-database.com/wood-articles/distinguishing-red-oak-from-white-oak/

White oaks pours are semi clogged with a white substance
where red oak pours are wide open..

Makes white more rot and water resistant ....

Now I know why I had a bear of a time cleaning up some
Of the end grain portions where the white was blocking
my view of the wood !!!!

Have to say, I haven't been this content since I was a kid !!!
Love this !!

White oak is a muxh better bow wood then red oak. It's tension strong and can be used to back other woods such as ipe. My best shooter to date is a white oak backed ipe.
