Buffing horn overlays

I made my first Horn(well-hoof) overlays and sanded them down to 2000 grit paper. Then I buffed them with a dry Dremel buffing wheel. Nice but not really glossy. I hesitate to use buffing compound because I'm afraid of staining the surrounding wood. What should I use?

I just put Tru-Oil on them and they shine nicely.

I'm mostly a tung oil guy, haven't tried tru oil yet. Horn shines like glass when it gets any finish on it

I use a buffing wheel with white buffing compound, but don't buff anything but horn or in your case toes with that wheel

me too. I just sand it down the same as the wood and put tru-oil on it. Looks great to me.

I hit them w 0000 steel wool, they don't shine until finish hits them. Get them to glossy and the finish w flake off.

I'm with bubby, I use a buffing wheel and white compound.  Makes it shine like glass. I have tried just using Tru-oil over fine sanded horn, but I didn't like the results as well as buffing them.

Here's the buffer and the shiny tips. The buffer comes with a little jar of compound that doesn't stain.
