Will this work?

So I was finally able to get my hands on some Osage.  I have 2 pieces just like this, the other is an inch or so wider than this one.











The one knot that might be an issue.

What draw length are you shooting for.  I have never worked osage but that loos like a great piece.

Looks like it would make a nice bendy bow.   You might want to get that raccoon out of your workshop.

That won't work at all, too short to narrow, rings are bad and it ain't yeller enough! Send it to me, I have a wood stretcher, and a paint brush. Maybe I can make something with it. Patrick

Just take it slow, exercise the bow as you remove wood and it begins to bend, take it slow, never pull it over the intended weight and take it slow.  ;) Post pics of your progress and any problems you may run into and we'll keep you on the right track.
  That's a nice piece of osage and it should make you a nice little bow.   8)

Couple questions...

Stiff or Bendy handle?

Flipped tips or not?

Sapwood on or off?

At which point (or percentage) of the limb should I start tapering toward the tips?  Is it like a board bow where a pyramid style seems to be ideal?

It's probably going to be a week or so before I get started on this one.  I have to finish the BBI that I am currently working on.

Use the full 57" of length and make a bendy handle bow. Yes flip the tips. Chase down to the first dark ring under the sapwood.

Absolutely likeable stick of wood.  I have done with worse!

+1 on the bendy with flipped tips.  You can also make the bow with a grip area just barely bending, so the side view of the bow when bent is slightly eliptical instead of circular. 

Those first yellow rings will do just fine.  If you find that you have hit a full ring, but it is partially sapwood and partially heartwood, don't worry about it.  Practice chasing rings in the sapwood and by the time yoou get to the heartwood, it will be a lead pipe cinch!

Looks like a great piece of osage.  I agree with the others, bendy handle and flipped tips.

I'd remove the bark and sapwood, chase a decent ring, profile it, get it tillered to a low brace height (moving maybe 20") and then recurve the tips. I'd leave a short 4-5" non-bending handle. JMO of course!
