Am I correct in saying when chasing a ring in cherry sapwood I'm after the lighter colour wood?

Yes, the spring growth is darker than the summer rings. How come you are chasing a ring in cherry? Just curious, interested......

I thought it would be preferable to have a continuous ring on the back... Not necessary with cherry sapwood?

One ring is always good on any wood. Continue chasing buddy! Its best to cut in the spring and peel the bark off clean to a back, but we don't all have that liberty.

You are totally right that one ring is best. I guess I assumed you had a stave from a tree, and I thought that the ring under that the bark was right there for you. If you are chasing a ring in lumber, then by all means proceed. You are correct.
