Elk and Osage Flatbow
« on: November 10, 2014, 08:34:55 pm »
I finished this one up a few weeks ago but, with hunting season rolling along it took me awhile to take some pictures.  It is made from a belly split of a osage stave I have.  Its nice when you can get a couple bows out of a stave.  It has some nice orange streaks in with the typical yellow color.  My buddy Drew was nice enough to give me some leather made from an elk hide that I used for the grip so, I thought it was appropriate to use elk antler for the overlays.  Kind of an elk theme.  The bow shoots really nice and is small enough to be handy in the treestand.  I wish I could have finished it before deer season.  It springs back to just over 2 inches of reflex after unstringing.  It is 62-1/2 inches ttt and draws 50# @ 27".  It has 6 or 7 coats of Spar Urethane.  I think I spent more time sanding and finishing this bow that any other.  I hope you enjoy looking.

Well, now!  Talk about pipe straight piece of wood.  She's a plain jane, but I like those best of all.

Guns have triggers. Bicycles have wheels. Trees and bows have wooden limbs.

Thanks guy, I really like this one. I plan on shooting it quite a bit this winter. I have a little more sweat equity in this one also because I made it completely with hand tools, not by choice but, my bandsaw blade broke and I wanted to make it while I waited for the new blade to arrive.

Nice!
Did the Native Americans think about all this that much or just do it?

Sweet bow, Ryan!! 8)

looks great, Ryan! Using hand tools takes longer, but I like the connection with the wood.
