Ash flatbow with painted back 55/26" (No. 54)
« on: November 07, 2014, 04:43:13 pm »
After a lot of computer problems, malfunction on email and hidding bandwith at photobucket I'm back and the pics in my posts appeared again. Hope everything is holding up.

I've made lots of bows meanwhile, here is one.

I have seen some 'great basin bows' awhile and had those in mind when doing this one. Don't know if I'm on the right track, but anyway it turned out as a sweet shooting flatbow. Design is a bendy handle, moderate flipped tips, flat belly, symmetrical. It got tiny pin self nocks.
The back is painted with homemade paint from earth pigments and hide glue. It came out very clean and didn't look how I wanted it. So I did some antiquing. After a second layer of paint with avoiding ruler like lines it looked already much better. Next was particular sanding and rubbing on some brown pigments as a patina. At least a particular heating brought a very rustic 'used' optic.
Handle is simple wrapped buckskin, two leather strips glued on the belly makes a deeper grip.
Length is 54½”
Mass is 495 grams

Very cool!  I am always amazed by the craftsmanship and variety of all the different bows you make.

Very cool Simon, excellent bend on that one.  The paint job and handle wrap look great as well, has that museum relic look to it, I love that look. Looks like you gave it a good deep heat treatment on the belly
as well, the resting and braced profiles show how nice your work really is.
I ain't broke but I'm badly bent.

Another very finely crafted bow Simon.  Yeah, I really like the tiller too.  As a matter of fact, I like the whole bow.

Nice one, I like the handle and the the slender outer limbs, should be shooting very pleasantly. I like self made pigments a lot, it just looks way cool and doesn't destroy the wood's magic like acrylic paint sometimes does.
Don't shoot!
