Hackberry Stave Question
« on: November 07, 2014, 11:35:04 am »
I have a hackberry stave and the rings are really close together. I do not see any sapwood and the back does not look like it is one continuous unviolated ring.
What is the best way to approach this? Should I try to follow a ring?

Where did you get the stave from? Why is the back not in one continuous ring? If the bark is still on, all you have to do is remove it to reveal the back.

Chasing a ring on Hackberry is doable, but no fun.  Get a picture up of the back and the perceived violations.

Glue some rawhide or silk down. Chasing a ring is doable as slim mentioned, but it takes semi expert hands and eyes to do so.

Ditto Pearlie's suggestion. If its a minor ring violation a rawhide or cloth backing should make it ok. Awhile back I made a nice hackberry flatbow that was decrowned then backed with linen. That might be an option.
