Gnarly tree

There are some Gnarly trees in this area but this one gives a whole new meaning to twisted.   :o   the second photo shows the leaves that are about 3" long and the tree has tiny seed pods like a maple.

Looks like Black Locust to me except the leaves aren't that big.....and the pods are long and dark brown

That's a black locust for sure.

The leaves are about 8-10" long, while the leaflets are up to 1½". It's a compound leaf. The pods are nothing similar to maple. I can't understand why you make that comparison. Black locust has bean like pods with several hard seeds inside. Maple has one winged nuts.

Black locust is excellent bow wood, although this particular tree seems to have too much twist and too many knots.

 It's a compound leaf and the pods are like you said  bean like. And apparently it is native to only BC in Canada.   ;D Now I know what the tree across the street from me is.  Black locust is still quite rare here.    ::)

I thought BL was rare too, but I see it growing wild everywhere in Vancouver.
I scored a trees worth last spring ( about 20 staves!). Good thing or I'd for sure
be doing some pruning around here
