Osage staves wanted
« on: October 28, 2014, 09:10:33 pm »
I am looking for 2 Osage staves. 66 inches or longer. If you have any you are willing to part with, let me know what you would need for them. I currently only have Wonderstone as any kind of trade fodder. But can round up supplies pretty quick.

Wonderstone is Rhyolite, basically under heated Obsidian. Super hard, but very pretty.

Here is a description I found:

Wonderstone is a rhyolitic composition which is a volcanic rock composed predominantly of volcanic glass particles which have been welded or stuck together by heat and compacted by the weight of overlying material. Alteration of the rock by circulating ground water produces the colorful banding. The brown type looks alot like wood. The maroon or yellow-brown color is due to the presence of iron oxides. It is easy to carve and is about the hardness of alabaster.Wonderstone is the term commonly used to describe the stone Pyrophyllite. Most well known is a dark grey to black variety found in Africa, although there are additional occurrences in many countries throughout the world in a variety of colors.

It can be knapped, that is why I have it up for trade.

I just ended up with a bunch of Sthil Chainsaw blades. I can offer those in trade as well. They are used, but in my opinion most of them have more than half life left. I have 12, 14 and 20 inch blades. 15, 20 inch, the first photo shows the best on the right worst on left. One 12 inch, second photo. 7, 14 inch last photo, best on the right worst on the left.

Is that rock knappable? There are lots of mixed ideas on rhyolute I know. I've exhausted much time trying to find knappable rock in my area and while I have found lots of pieces none if it is big enough.

So far I have worked it a bit. It seems ok, but not great. I'll let you know more when I know more.
