tupelo & snakeskin bow
« on: October 26, 2014, 07:19:49 pm »
Finished this one a couple months ago, posting it now so Gun Doc can see what became of this stave he gave me at the Classic and so H. Rhodes can see what became of the canebrake skin he gave me at the same time. Sorry guys, I kinda messed up both but the end result isn't all that bad. ;)
Heres a link to a post about my follies with this one a few months ago;  http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,47361.0.html
Tips are following the string quite a bit, likely the result of me not drying the stave enough and (or) my tillering mistakes. I really liked the wood though and would use it again in a heartbeat. Thanks Josh for the chance to give tupelo a go buddy. Snakeskin backing was also a first for me and it looked just outstanding and went on with no hitches. I had about 4 coats of finish on it and for some unknown reason I thought I needed to sand it aggressively to get those little tails to disappear. Well I end up sanding all the natural color and most of the pattern off a beauty of a canebrake skin. Sorry Howard.
I ended up rubbing on some brown leather dye and some pattern a color came back to the skin, it actually looks pretty good now, just not as nice as before I had that brain f@rt.
Haven't weighed it but I'd say somewhere in the low 40's @ 24" draw. A little sluggish in cast and a little handshock but really not to bad. Seems to put the arrow right where I'm looking too. Not my best bow building effort but I shot it a bunch this morning and I'm kinda diggin' it. ;D
Here she is guys, thanks for taking a look. :)

bends look nice Greg and a nice save on the skins, I like soaking my skins in glycerin most of the scales just fall off and it really brings out the color

   Greg,
Bend and resting profile look great from here man. No experience with Black Tupelo though I see a bunch of it around.

-Yeah Bill its the same one I was working at Marshall, Clint has the other half of this stave now.
-Thanks Bub, I got the scales off with no problem it was just the little tags/hairs at the scale tips that I couldn't get to lay flat. In hindsight I realized they weren't an issue and I should have left them as is.
-Thanks Don
-Thanks Paul

Great looking bow Greg.  I'll have to try and do the other half justice.
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

Nice one Greg! I'm liking the dark stain over the cane breaks and you got a good bend on that little stick.

Bubby, how do you get the glycerin out so you can glue them down?
