Hope it works out
« on: October 18, 2014, 05:15:05 pm »
Tyke and I went out for a little rock hunting adventure today. On the way was a small town, with a small cafe. We stopped in for breakfast. Our server was a 9 year old little girl, helping her mom run the place (gas station, grocery store, cafe). The food was great, and super cheap. We left her a hefty tip for the awesome service. About 15 miles out of town we came to the pit.

From a distance it doesn't look to promising. But once you get up close you realize that there is more stone here than you could use in quite some time. We took a few hours and chipped each promising looking rock. We ended up with a pretty good haul. We only brought back stone that spalled well, and looked waxy and not too coarse. Here is the results.

It seems to knap well. There is no doubt that it is harder than Obsidian. One issue is that in the dark red bands it doesn't seem to be as hard. I noticed that when we were out there. And while working it your hands get rusty, almost like if you were to sand something rusty. And it is still sharp, took one to the bottom of my foot.  >:D

That's the best looking Wonder Stone I have seen and there seems to be mountains of it! Wyoming or Utah? I think it is found mostly in SW Wyoming, but I'm going by memory here and have never been rockhounding in Wyo, just fishing!

Here is what I have so far. I am not a good knapper. I have huge issues with spalling, and pressure flaking. This stuff is super hard, so pressure flaking seems even more difficult for me. But it is shapable. I need to make an Ishi stick and knap sitting down.

Nice haul! Will it take heat to knap easier?
