Hedeby Bow Info Needed
« on: October 10, 2014, 04:46:59 am »
I'm looking to make a bow in the style of the Hedeby bow.
I've trawled the internet but can only find lo res pictures with unreadable text.
I've tried E-mailing the museum (no response), I've looked at the threads of PA and PP but still can't seem to find any reliable detail.
Has anyone got and decent info, or better still seen it?
One thing I'm interested in is the peg just below the top nock is it a knot? metal? What?

Im ashamed to say that I have seen it, but didnt care much for details since all my focus at the time was on elm stone age bows:-(.

This thread has some pictures and discussion....in Norwegian:-(: http://forum.bueforum.no/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=135&start=30

The pictures on page 2 in the thread might be usefull to you.

There seem to be concensus that the "peg" is indeed an iron spike.

Sorry I cant be of more help

Brilliant  :)
Great link, thanks. Google translation was good enough to let me make some sense of it.
I don't much like the fat tips, but having read that it may have acted as a ski pole or some such other use, it makes more sense.
The pics are a great help too.
I don't have a stave long enough for 61", but I'd read other info that it was longer... I don't think I'll make it any longer than the stave I have ;) , it's going to be "in the style of" at about 40-50#
I'll post pics when it's done of course ;D
cheers

Eirik made one from Norwegian yew, using exact dimensions.  Came out around 160# I think.  It's on Paleoplanet if you ever look on there?

Sorry Del - it wasn't a Hedeby bow he made, it was a Balinderry bow.  Looks very similar though, and probably similar draw weight in the original.

Here's the Balinderry he made

And here's one of Daniel's Hedeby bows, with a bit of discussion about them, and a video.  It's not much help, but it might give you something.
