Osage Orange log 12" by 12' $150 worth the buy?
« on: October 07, 2014, 11:46:44 pm »
So I'm not selling this log but found my this post on craigslist and not sure where to post this on the forum but was wondering if an Osage orange log that's 12" by 12' long for 150 bucks is a steal. Let me know what you guys think.
(Tried to upload the picture from my phone but the file size is too large. It looks to be in very good condition though.)

Thanks!

I live in Osage country so take this with a grain of salt.  In log form, no way would I pay that.  $50 bucks tops.  The very best you could hope for would be eight 6' staves.  That's IF there are no hidden surprises.  With Osage there are usually many such surprises.  If it was split into staves, bark and sapwood removed and all sealed up, then and only then would i pay $150.  I hope this isn't crossing the line on the rules.  If so, I apologize.   Josh

A lot of things to look at like end checks if it was cut awhile ago and not sealed  (checking) , worms in the wood , bark left on for awhile  which seems to draw the grubs I just mentioned , what the grain looks like (twisted, spiraled etc.) ring size, and probably some other things I am not thinking about. I'm just saying be careful not all wood is good bow wood. Some things would be hard to see from pic also.

Now I live near Nashville Tennessee and was wondering if there are any places near or states near that grow Osage. Because I'm not sure if it's extremely rare where I am at.

Nashville is covered up with osage. When they made I-65 south almost every tree they cut and piled in burn piles for 10-15 miles were osage. If you drive that way now most of the trees just off the right of way are osage.

Osage Mike McGuire and his dad and sold 30K osage staves they cut around Nashville.

I got in trouble one time on here for talking about $$$$. They said we don't do that here.
Did the Native Americans think about all this that much or just do it?

I am an hour and 45 mins north. If your up for a road trip we can go cut some off my place for a little sweat equity. We have a huge osage we are taking down later in the winter, or any number of more manageable trees.

You can talk about it and sell stuff if you want, just do it through emails and PM's. Nobody seems to be selling anything in this thread.
