I personally would not use oak for backing because its so Grainy in nature I would be more comfortable with maple or boo.  But thats me.

well I wouldn't use red oak for a backer, white oak is a different breed of oak though
failure is an option, everyone fails, it's how you handle it that matters.

The last bow I finished was a red oak board backed with a white oak strip.  Brute of a bow, at least for me at 60 lbs.  I scraped it down to 50, and is a sweet shooter.  I've never had a white oak backed board or a white oak bow fail.  Strong stuff, white oak.
