If you have successful combos you would like to share please do. I'm going to keep adding to the post when I get a new combos.

How big does your golden rod grow?
I can only find pencil size diameter.

Our golden rod out here grows about 5ft tall...sometimes 6'. The girth is usually pretty thick.

A pencil is 5/16" I like my hand drill spindle a little thicker but 5/16 will work , The skinny ones just go thru your hearth board quicker

I try to find as big as I can. They shrink up quite a bit when they're dry. There's like 35 different species.... So it's just the matter of finding the right stuff. I know it's currently my favorite spindle..... Works on a variety of hearths..

Raised in Oklahoma and living in SW Missouri, I have found that a yucca drill works well with a hearth of cottonwood, large yucca stem, or cedar. My preference is a cedar hearth board
