Over here, we're blessed, lol! Our yards are all red sand with sparse mesquite and cottonwood trees here and there. Some kind of desert tumbleweed-type plants, goathead thorn shrubs. There's two yards I've seen where they've gotten grass to grow and they have to take constant care of it. You'll see more corn growing in peoples' yards than lawns. Mules, donkeys, horses, sheep, goats, and some cows all wandering around loose. Had donkeys in the front yard a couple weeks ago. If anyone has a lawn in their front yard, they have to fence it. Otherwise, it'll get eaten, roots and all.
But if you had some place here that was setting out bales of hay with a "free" sign on them, they'd be gone in ten minutes or less. Anything that can be used or re-used doesn't get thrown away out here. I saw this dude set up over at this flea market in Chinle who buys old tires. Why? Well, you put those on the roof of your trailer house to keep the near-constant wind from lifting off the roof.
