Stabilized corn cob knife scales??(Pics added)

Has anyone worked with or made stabilized corn cob knife scales?? Been lookin at them online..pretty cool but very expensive..I saw a post where a guy made some..Dried out a corn cob..split it down the middle and "stabilized" it in a a 3:1 ratio mixture of miniwax wood stabilizer.boiled linseed oil,and shellac..Soaked for 4 days and then let dry..just wondering if anyone has worked with/ tried this..I got some corn cob drying now...Thanks Bill

    Haven't tried that method myself but I've been thinking on using epoxy. Would like to try using a vacuum to draw the epoxy in but don't know enough about that yet. Corncobs do look great though and I want to try a hidden tang. Maybe use a quarter for the cap.

Bill, have you tried soaking the corn cob scales in Massey finish? It is epoxy thinned with acetone. As long as the acetone doesn't evaporate(keep sealed while soaking the dried cob scales) the epoxy won't set up. Once it does evaporate the epoxy sets like normal.

I haven't tried epoxy yet...I just pulled my "Scales" from the mixture I mentioned...Im gonna let them dry for a few days and see how it goes

Ok an update: I pulled the future knife scales out of my mixture yesterday...I took them to work and let them sit in our paint booth during the bake cycle(3 times) and the dried out pretty good..I took them home and began filling the voids with gel super glue..Tomorrow I"ll begin shaping and sanding....NOTE:::::: Do Not ever, and I mean ever try to dry out a Corn cob in the microwave:::Ask me how I know....... ::) ::)

Well I got the scales, knife and sheath all done...Man those scales were a PAIN!.. If I ever do anymore ill make myself a vacuum chamber.. Overall I'm pretty happy with the whole package...
The knife blade is made from an old file.. Scales are applied with epoxy and silver pins

They look really cool! I have to admit I was a little dubious but they turned out great. Oh, the blade is nice too >:D

Thanks guys..I forgot to add that after the cob scales dried out I filled all the leftover voids with super glue..I used 4 tubes all together..After the glue was cured up I wet sanded with 2000 grit paper and polished..
